3 simple steps to get rid of your stuff, responsibly, during a move
Do you wonder what you should be doing with all your stuff, especially because you are about to move. Maybe you’re helping your parents downsize and they have 30-years worth of stuff and you’re unsure how to go about removing it irresponsibly. It’s possible that you haven’t gotten around to answering this question because there are so many other logistics that are priority.
Can I afford the time and effort it takes to get rid of stuff responsibly?
You might be thinking but this will take so much extra time and effort. It goes without saying that slowing down and considering where items need to go instead of the landfill takes a little bit extra. We are here to help with that. We are going to share where you can go with what items so that you don’t have to do the research.
Three simple ways to get rid of stuff responsibly
We are going to share 3 simple ways to get rid of your stuff responsible during a move. For years, we at The Happy Nest have made it a priority to take the extra time and steps to recycle, donate and rehouse items through a move so that we can stand behind one of our main values, living responsible on the planet.
Step 1. Recycle:
This might seem obvious, but a lot of people just find it easier to chuck whatever they come across while moving because it’s easier.
HAPPY TIP: Set up all your recycling bins, have them labeled as to what goes where and let everyone helping know what the system is. Karla, our leader in packing, is so good at letting us all know exactly what her plan is which always makes it easier.
Bonus tip: Be aware of the pickup dates, so that you can get the recycling picked up by the city rather than taking an extra trip.
Step 2. Donate:
Again, maybe this is obvious but because you may not know where to take stuff it’s easier to get rid of it.
HAPPY TIP: Pick 3 organizations you want to donate to maybe because they mean something to you, or they’re close by. For us, The Happy Nest loves donating to WIN because it supports Women In Need.
Step 3. Rehouse/Sell:
Selling items that are no longer needed is great. The item won’t go to the landfill, and others get something that they don’t have to spend lots of money on. It really serves all people involved.
HAPPY TIP : There are so many places to post items for sale, look into your favorite app and go from there. Ideas: Facebook Marketplace, Varage, Kijiji, Used___________ , Craigslist. You might even have a neighborhood email list or facebook group.
Getting rid of stuff responsibly is part of our jobs at The Happy Nest.
Moves create an enormous amount of waste that typically would go straight to the landfill and contribute to a larger problem, climate change. We’re all about working responsibility, contributing to a positive effect on the planet and of course, it’s good karma!
